Sunderland's last major trophy came in 1973, a 1–0 victory over Leeds United in the FA Cup final. A Second Division club at the time, Sunderland won the match thanks largely to the efforts of goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery, who saved two of Peter Lorimer's shots in quick succession. Ian Porterfield scored with a 30th-minute volley to beat Leeds and take home the trophy. Since 1973, only two other clubs have matched Sunderland's achievement of lifting the FA Cup in games outside the top flight of English football.
